Saturday after the Fifth Sunday of Lent
Here beginneth the 6th chapter of 1 Samuel.
Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.And the ark of the
Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
Then said they, What the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague on you all, and on your lords.
Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.And take the ark of the
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that not his hand smote us; it a chance happened to us.
And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.And they laid the ark of the
And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside the right hand or the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
And Beth-shemesh reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see .

And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen , they returned to Ekron the same day.

Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten of the people with a great slaughter.And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the
Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy
Lord; come ye down, fetch it up to you.And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the
Here endeth the first lesson.
Here beginneth the 3rd chapter of Hebrews.
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses in all his house.
For this was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
For every house is builded by some ; but he that built all things God.
And Moses verily faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in heart; and they have not known my ways.
So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
But with whom was he grieved forty years? not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
